Never Flush Your Contact Lenses Down The Drain

Every year, about 45 million people pop contact lenses on their eyes to help them see better, but a study from researchers from Arizona State University suggests users are not very good at dealing with those lenses once they’re done with them.

The study said about 15 to 20% of those who wear contact lenses dispose of their old lenses by flushing them, either down the sink or in the toilet.

According to the study, the lenses end up contributing to pollution in oceans, lakes, and rivers.

Rolf Halden, director of the Biodesign Institute’s Center for Environmental Health Engineering at ASU, says a simple first step to combat the pollution would be for manufacturers to provide on product packaging information on proper disposal.

So, how should you properly dispose of contact lenses?  Place them in the trash with other solid waste.  Never flush them.

Find out more here about how improperly disposing of contacts affects the environment.
